Words on Safety

Pottery and ceramics are very rewarding hobbies and careers, but there are safety issues that must be addressed. Airborne dusts and some chemicals used in the making of clay and glazes are inherently dangerous. This is not to say that we have to live in fear when using clay, but that certain commonsensical procedures must be followed. Here are some basic safety suggestions:

- Read all directions and labels
- Know what you are using. Portland Pottery supplies MSDS on all products sold upon request and will try and answer any questions you have
- Avoid breathing dust. Use a respirator in dusty situations
- At the end of a work day, clean your space
- Don’t eat, drink or smoke in your work space
- Wash hands after working and before eating, drinking or smoking
- Wash clothing when contaminated
- Keep children away from hazardous materials
