2012 Summer Camp!

Session 1: BFFs with Clay • June 25-29

A friend is a friend to the end!  Start the summer off right by sharing time with a friend.  This beginning session will be all about old and new friends.  Students will work together on projects that will include self portraits, the pottery wheel, friendship bracelets, scrap books and photo albums.  Sign up for this session with a friend, and each student will receive a $30 discount.  $250

Session 2: Creative Independence • July 2-6 (4 day week, no camp July 4)

Students at will explore this patriotic holiday through a variety of clay, metal, and fabric projects. Students will learn clay techniques including the potters wheel, sculpting, metal shaping, joining, and they will also learn a variety of jewelry techniques. This camp is a great way to explore the arts, make friends, and be creative
in an “independent” way.  $200

Session 3: Focus on Clay • July 9-20

This special two-week session will focus mainly on clay. The extended time period allows us more time to work on the wheel and in wet clay, learning how a real potter makes pots. We’ll look at the history of pottery, and get inspiration from the Egyptians, Mayans, Native Americans and Ancient Japanese masters. Throwing, trimming, embellishing, and firing will be covered. We’ll even “Raku”! Other activities will include some basic jewelry making techniques, mosaics, and more. This is a great session for those looking for an intense clay experience! (2 weeks). $450

Session 4: Girly Metals • July 9-13

Jewelry galore!  If you like to accessorize then this is the class for you!  Earrings, pendants, rings, beading – we will do it all!  Campers will learn the ways of the metalsmithing studio including hot & cold soldering techniques, polishing, wire wrapping & more! Ages 8 & up please. (Ages 8-14) $250

Session 5: Manly Metals • July 16-20

This metalsmithing class is for all you guys out there who want to bang with hammers, use torches and flames, and cut with saws. This is no jewelry making class. You will make belt buckles, metal sculptures, and create action figure accessories just to name a few. Campers will learn the ways of the metalsmithing studio, including hot & cold soldering techniques, polishing, wire wrapping, & more! (Ages 8-14) $250

Session 6: Glass Fusing & Joining • July 23-27

Students will have the opportunity to create one of a kind glass creations. Assembling and melting glass  together to create sculptures, pendants, and glass beads. This session will be taught by professional glass. Artist Bethany Haeseler.

Session 7: Animal Sculptures • July 30-August 3

In this camp we will draw inspiration from animals of the land and sea, our pets and animals from our imaginations. Students will use clay and metal to create sculptures of their favorite animals. We’ll explore different sculpture methods, decorating and combining mediums.  $250

Session 8: Fashion Forward • August 6-10

Portland Pottery’s version of Project Runway! Campers will learn how to make fun and interesting clothing and accessories for the end of the week gallery show. Basic sewing machine skills, tie-dye, button making and felting are some of the projects. Let’s put our heads together and come up with some fabulous designs! This session will be taught by Arlee Woodworth who has an MFA from Mass College of Art.  $250

Session 9: A Potter’s Life • August 6-10

This session will give us more time to work with the equipment that professional potters use. The Wheel, Extruder, and Slab roller are all part of a potter’s workshop. We will focus on functional pottery with attention to our
own personal styles. How would you decorate your pots, what would be your motif. We will visit a local studio to see a real potter in action.  $250

Basic sewing machine skills, tie-dye, button making and felting are some of the projects. Let’s put our heads together and come up with some fabulous designs! Session 11: Raku Firing for Kids • August 13-17

Raku is a Japanese technique of firing that is quick, interactive and fun!  Campers will spend the beginning of
 the week making a variety of pots and sculptures.  On Thursday & Friday they will glaze and immediately fire the pieces outside using our raku kiln.  Once the kiln reaches temperature, we open the door and pull the glowing
pots out, tossing them into piles of sawdust!  When the pots are cool, students will clean the pieces and take  them home that day!! $250

Session 12: Metalsmithing • August 20-24

In these one-week intensive sessions, we will work in copper, nickel, silver, beads, clay and glass to create beautiful pieces of jewelry and sculpture.  Campers will learn the ways of the metalsmithing studio, including hot and cold soldering techniques, polishing, wire wrapping and more.  Other mediums will be introduced for embellishment of metal projects, or in addition to our metals curriculum.  $250

TEEN SESSIONS:

We are very excited to offer summer sessions for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17. These sessions will run from 6-9pm, meeting once per week for six weeks, and will be similar to our adult classes with focused and challenging projects.  We may enjoy local field trips, walks to the Eastern Prom for materials and inspiration, and visits from local artists.  This will be a great opportunity for students to work on their art portfolios and have extended time in the studio.  In addition the student will have access to the studio to practice and work on their projects during open studio hours.

METALSMITHING FOR TEENS • Tuesdays July 10-August 14

In this session we will work in copper, nickel, silver, beads, clay and glass, to create beautiful pieces of jewelry and sculpture. Students will learn the ways of the metalsmithing studio, including hot and cold solder­ing techniques, polishing, wire wrapping, enameling and more. Other mediums will be introduced for embellishment of metal projects, or in addition to our metals curriculum.

CLAY FOR TEENS • Wednesdays July 11-August 15

This clay session will help students develop their wheel throwing, sculpting, and tile making skills. We will start by working on the potter’s wheel and students will have long periods of uninterrupted instruction and practice to hone their skills. Students will also learn a brief history of clay, methods of building and glazing techniques. Proj­ects will include sets, covers, plates, sculptures and more. Students can work on their favorite techniques; they will participate in a “raku” firing, and will learn about different glaze temperatures.

GLASSWORK FOR TEENS • Thursdays July 12-August 16

Students will take an in-depth look at glass arts and will have the opportunity to create one of a kind glass creations using methods of slumping, fusing, and enameling. They will also learn techniques for making stained glass. This session will be taught by professional glass artist Bethany Haeseler.

This summer we’re looking forward to having fun both inside and outside of our studio! Each session will include wheel throwing, hand building and sculpting in clay, plus basic metalsmithing projects in the jewelry room. Specific projects will be inspired by different themes, as described above.  If you’re interested in making a ring for your best friend or a mask to hang in your home, you’ll find all the tools, supplies, and assistance you need right here!  Camp meets from 9-3pm each day from Monday to Friday (unless otherwise noted).  Ages 6 and up please.
