Standard Ceramic Mid-High Fire Clay Descriptions

#101 Buff Clay
 An all purpose stoneware clay with a wide firing range for throwing and modeling.  Buff color at low temperature and soft gray at cone 9.
Cone 02-9 At Cone 4  Shrinkage   9 %         Abs.       5% At Cone 9  Shrinkage 12%          Abs.       3%

#108 Red Clay w/Grog
A high fire clay with medium grog and sand for surface texture and minimal warping and cracking.  This clay is designed for sculpture, slab or coil building.
Cone 4-10 At cone 4  Shrinkage  10.5 % Abs. 6% At cone 10 Shrinkage 12% Abs. 3%

#112  Brown Clay
A plastic clay for wheel and modeling. The addition of granular manganese gives a speckled surface.  The ideal temperature for developing best color tone is cone 5.   Good results may be expected in reduction or oxidation firing.
Cone 4-6 At cone 4  Shrinkage 12 % Abs. 4.5% At cone 6 Shrinkage 12.5% Abs. 2.5%

#119 Stoneware Clay
Contains coarse silica sand.  Good for both salt and wood firings.   Natural earth colorants yield orange -brown at cone 4 reduction fire.
Cone 4-10 At cone 4  Shrinkage 10% Abs. 4% At cone 10 Shrinkage 12% Abs. 2.5%

#153 Stoneware Clay
A soft warm beige in oxidation- a rich gray brown in reduction. Responds well to all techniques.  Excellent for the production potter and classroom use. Cone 4-10 At cone 4  Shrinkage 11% Abs. 6% At cone 10 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 2%

#181  White Stoneware Body
Very Smooth white stoneware body. Contains no fire clay
Cone 6-8 At cone 6 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 2.8 % At cone 8 Shrinkage 13.5%  Abs. 3%

#182  White Stoneware Body
Near white plastic stoneware body.  Good for wide with bright glazes. Available with and with out fine grog.
Cone 8 At cone 4  Shrinkage 10% Abs 6% At cone 8 Shrinkage 11% Abs. 3%

#200 Clay
All Purpose range clay.  Orange-brown in reduction.  Deep beige in oxidation.  Contains fine grog.
Cone 4-6 At cone 4 Shrinkage 10% Abs. 3.5% At cone 6 Shrinkage 12.5%  Abs. 2.0%

#205  Stoneware
Formulated for reduction firing. Muted brick red  at cone 4,  stone gray at cone 10. Contains fine grog.
Cone 4-10 At cone 4 Shrinkage 10.5% Abs. 4% At cone 10 Shrinkage 12.5% Abs. 1.5%

#213 Porcelain Clay
A white Body formulated for cone 6 firing, plastic, throw-able clay.
Cone 6 Shrinkage 12% Abs. 1.7%

#225  Brown Clay
Same characteristics as #112,  but has no specks. Ideal for throwing and slab work.
Cone 4-6 At cone 4 Shrinkage 12% Abs 4.2% At cone 6 Shrinkage 12.5% Abs. 3.5%

#257 Grolleg  Porcelain
A porcelain body with aparian like quality.   It’s white, tight and translucent when thin.  Contains no ball clay.
Cone 8-10 At cone 8 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 1% At cone 10 Shrinkage 15% Abs. 0.65%

#259 Stoneware Clay
Formulated to be similar to  the #153, but richer in color tones.
Cone 4-10 At cone 4 Shrinkage 12% Abs. 4.5% At cone 10 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 0.85%

#266 Dark Brown Clay  Gives reduction-like dark brown color in electric kiln.  Smooth and plastic .   Good for all techniques
Cone 4-6 At cone 4  Shrinkage  11.5% Abs. 2.4% At cone 6 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 1.4%

#306 Brown Firing Clay
Smooth throwing body.  Orange-brown in reduction,  muted  orange to cone 4 oxidation.  Gray at cone 10 oxidation.
Cone 4-10 At cone 4 Shrinkage 11% Abs. 4% At cone 10 Shrinkage 13% Abs. 1%

#308 Brooklyn Red Clay
Red Stoneware body with sand and grog.  Oxidation firing yields a red at cone 4,  and deep sand at cone 8.
Cone 4-8 At cone 4 Shrinkage 10.5% Abs.6% At cone 10 Shrinkage 12% Abs.3%

#365 Grolleg Porcelain
Same as #257 but formulated to fire at a lower temperature.
Cone 6 At cone 6 Shrinkage 13.5% Abs. 0.6%

#420  Sculpture
Standard’s most heavily grogged body,  formulated for sculpture colored at cone 6,  off white at cone 2.
Cone 2-6 At cone 4 Shrinkage 2% Abs 0.8% At cone 8 Shrinkage 6% Abs.1.5%
