The History of Portland Pottery

Portland Pottery was conceived about 29 years ago when Lisa Bonarrigo opened a teaching studio in her 2nd floor apartment in Portland, Maine. For want of a reliable clay source in Portland, which at the time had become an ever-increasing problem, she and her husband, Chris Bruni, started Portland Pottery Supply. It soon became clear, that they were not alone in their search for a reliable source of clay and supplies, and very quickly, they had a long list of customers. Over the next ten years, Portland Pottery Supply expanded into one of the Northeast’s largest clay suppliers.

Due to this success, Lisa and Chris then decided to purchase a clay supply business in Braintree, Massachusetts. Portland Pottery South was opened in December 2002. The Braintree location is a perfect addition to the Portland Pottery operation, allowing us to reach a large number of customers within a reasonable delivery distance. The two stores now service customers in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and the Canadian Maritimes.

Lisa and Chris have enjoyed working and growing Portland Pottery over the last 28 years! That is not to say it has all been fun and games! It has been very hard work, posing many challenging situations and learning experiences. Much credit must be given to our employees. They are a hard working, reliable group, who use both their heads and their backs to meet the daily demands of the clay supply business. We hope you get a chance to meet them, and appreciate them, as much as we do.

When at the Portland Store, try visiting the “Studio”, the original part of Portland Pottery. The “Studio” contains a school and gallery and is housed in the same building as the supply store. We have been teaching classes for 26 years and have a very talented staff of instructors. We offer classes, workshops and a summer camp program. Our workshops vary year to year and cover many topics including, firing, glazing, decorating, sculpting and marketing. We also have a great metalsmithing department, and offer our classes to all ages and ability levels. Our gallery features the work of our staff, students and teachers. When you’re here, we hope that you will take some time to look around our classrooms and visit the gallery.
